Overview
1716 Chatham Ave Tybee Island, GA 31328 At Tybee’s Southern Cross Cottage as Faulkner said, “the past is never dead. It’s not even past”. Step back in time to 1935; sit on the porch and let things move a little slower and a little sweeter as the sound of the surf rocks you to sleep. This raised Tybee cottage is lovingly restored and decorated to take you back to the golden age of the Georgia Coast. Located at the crossroads on the southern end of Tybee just steps from the beach, back -river, and board walk the pool is always warm on cool fall evenings and cool on those steamy dog days of summer. The fire pit is a perfect spot to roast marshmallows, oysters or tell the grandkids a scary story as the firelight puts the kids and the dogs to sleep. When you see it for the first time you’ll understand why you came this way. Pets are welcome, complimentary wifi & high speed internet. We also offer complimentary domestic long distance phone calls! The framed drawings/cartoons etc. in the cottage are from Esquire magazines that were found in the attic of the house in 2006, they are from the early fifties and seemed to match the personality of the house. The championship score board downstairs is from Peachtree Golf Club in Atlanta. Peachtree was built by Bobby Jones and six close friends. Two of those friends were the owner's paternal and maternal grandfathers. If you look at the first names on the board , Charlie Black Jr. and Dick Garlington, Black was the father of the owner's mother (Dodie)who is featured in the framed golf club advertisement that is also downstairs. Both of these gentlemen grew up with Jones in Atlanta and often competed with him in tournaments. They were extremely good golfers yet they never chose to play professionally or compete on an international stage as Jones did. The level of golf talent in Atlanta during that era is truly phenominal. The reason Jones built Peachtree was because he could not play a round of golf in the years after he quit playing competitively without drawing a crowd. Peachtree provided a sanctuary for him and his friends to relax and enjoy the game, the tradition continues at Peachtree today, a place were gentleman and ladies can enjoy the game in it's purest form. The soldier on the wall downstairs is my grandfather and the photo was taken just prior to shipping out for the Pacific in WWII. He was a country boy from Cedartown GA, who volunteered to be a medic on the day after Pearl Harbor; twelve weeks later he was a machine gunner (so much for volunteering). He eventually wound up making six amphibious landings, including Okinawa and Guam where some of the most intense fighting in the Pacific occured. He was severely wounded on Okinawa and recieved six Bronze Stars for his actions in combat; (as you can tell I am extremely proud of him). The large ring of keys on the wall are from the Fulton County (Atlanta) Jail and one of them was to the cell where Wayne Williams, the infamous Atlanta childkiller was held. The owner's father was the jail director during that difficult period. The article about the purchase of the Crackers (the crackers were the forerunner of the Braves and were the winningest team in the old Southern League, before major league baseball came south in 1965) includes info about Charles Black Sr. What is not mentioned is that as a student at the University of Georgia from 1894-1898 Charlie brought his dog to school with him from Atlanta and the dog was often around the football practices. Eventually the girls tied red and black ribbons around the dog whose name was Trilby and took him to a game all dressed up........UGA then had their mascot and they became the Bulldogs. Sonny Sieler the current owner of UGA tells the story in his book "Damn Good Dawgs".
